Westwood International School (WIS), established in 1988, provides international education to children from Reception to University entrance level. The school has 600 students from 39 different countries who receive an international education. WIS is an International Baccalaureate World Continuum School offering Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP).

We’re on the lookout for a:

Secondary Principal

Westwood International School (WIS) is seeking a highly experienced international school professional to provide leadership within the Secondary Programme. The Secondary Principal will be responsible for a programme of study; which includes the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and the Diploma Program (IBDP. Experience of the IB Programs and curriculum development will be one of the essential qualities of the successful applicant. The school offers a competitive salary and benefits package; which includes annual home leave, furnished accommodation, medical insurance, gratuity and free tuition to dependents. There may also be opportunities for a teaching spouse.

The school invites applications for the Secondary Principal position at the school. This is a full-time position within a three-year contract period. The position is to commence on the 1st of September 2020.

Reporting Structure:

The Secondary Principal reports directly to the Head of the School (HOS) and has direct lines of authority over MYP and DP Coordinators; Learning Leaders of the Secondary School; Student Services Coordinator; and staff in other positions of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:

The Secondary Principal is responsible for the middle and secondary programmes at the school (Grades 7-13).

Core Competencies:

A Pedagogical Leader who can:

  • oversee and direct the academic and extra-curricular programs at the school
  • facilitate the regular review of curriculum – both horizontally and vertically
  • provide the resource support needed to enable quality teaching and learning

A Strong Communicator who can:

  • facilitate and manage meetings for staff and parents
  • develop reports and relate information pertaining to programmes at the school to various audiences

Someone experienced in supervision of professional and academic support staff.
This is to include:

  • knowledge of current Professional Development Models
  • ability to manage change
  • facilitate the process of recruitment and retention of professional staff
  • manage the performance of the academic staff

He/she must:

  • be knowledgeable in current approaches to assessment and reporting
  • supervise student affairs in the school including overall discipline and pastoral care
Professional Qualification and experience for the Secondary Principal at WIS:
  • Bachelor of Education / Masters in Education with experience in Educational management.
  • A recognized teaching certificate
  • Be able to supervise a team of IBDP or IBMYP teachers.
  • Be trained to teach subjects within the IBMYP or IBDP Programme
  • Preferably have experience with accrediting organizations e.g. Council of International School (CIS), International Baccalaureate
  • The candidate must be able to facilitate and promote critical thinking and international mindedness.

Mr. Jones is an international educator who has extensive experience, and in depth knowledge of all three IB programmes spanning over twenty-five years, as a teacher, examiner, teacher trainer and administrator.

Mr. Jones has worked on four different continents, and in ten different countries, thus giving him an extremely developed sense of cultural awareness.

In Africa, he has worked for a total of twelve years, eight years in Tanzania and four years in Zimbabwe.

He is a multi lingual and multi-cultural school leader - an English native speaker, who is also fluent in French and Spanish.

Mr Jones is joined here in Botswana by his French wife Martine.

Committed to creating globally minded students and teachers for the 21st century, Heidi has dedicated over 20 years to working in International education.  Prior to taking on the position of Secondary School at WIS, Heidi was the Head of School at the American International School of Niamey, Niger for 5 years.  She has also served as the Primary Principal for 5 years at the International School of Havana, Cuba.

Heidi holds a B. Ed.from McGill University (Canada), a M.S.T in English from the University of New Hampshire (USA), a M. Ed. in Educational Leadership from the College of New Jersey (USA) and is currently pursuing an Ed. D. in Leadership from the University of New England (USA).  Her research interests include professional learning, teacher agency, and transformational change.

Heidi and her husband Marc have 4 dogs and love living in Botswana.  Both Marc and Heidi enjoy travel and immersing themselves in the various cultures of the world and once took a two-year sabbatical and travelled to over 30 countries via local transport.

Mrs Esme de Jager has more than 25 years of experience in education. She holds a Master’s degree in Education and is a certified Psychologist. As a lifelong learner, she has attended various advanced levels of PYP and IB Continuum Leadership training, as well as school exchanges. She passionately believes in the power and ability of education to guide and develop children in order to improve the world and shape their future.

Mrs de Jager is actively involved in the International Educational world and is trained as an ACE; NEASC/CIS School accreditation visitor and was also invited as a presenter at two IB world conferences; at The Hague in 2017 and in Vienna in 2018. At The Hague she spoke about one of her great passions: The power of Authentic Service Learning.

She found that the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring conference enriched her life and perspective tremendously and it enabled her to pass this on to the Primary Teaching Faculty through several in-school workshops and ongoing guidance and mentoring.

Mr. Majoni is a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA). His 13 years of experience includes his articled clerkship served at Ziumbe Chartered Accountants (now Bakertilly) in Harare, Zimbabwe, to Gaborone where he joined Mazars Botswana as an Accounts Manager and then began his journey with Westwood in 2013.

As part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT),
Mr Majoni’s role at WIS is multi-faceted and involves him at a variety of levels of administration and operations. He is married to Leigh-Anne and their family is completed by 3 energetic boys.
